Delco Dispatch Simple: A Shift Towards Modernization in Countywide Communications

In recent years, the concept of modernizing county-wide communication systems has gained significant importance. One such example can be seen in our very own county, which is currently transitioning from an outdated EDACS TRS (Trunked Radio System) to a cutting-edge P25 phase 2 system. This move aims to replace the aging infrastructure and provide a more efficient and reliable means of communication for emergency responders and law enforcement officials.

As some may be aware, certain PSP patrol units in our county are currently equipped with County EDACS radios. Although this is not a widespread practice, it's fascinating to note that these units have occasionally made contact with local authorities, allowing for a limited exchange of information. However, with everything that the PSP has been through, it's highly unlikely that they will adopt a new system anytime soon.

In our county, the PSP covers half of the municipalities, making it crucial for us to be able to monitor their communications on the new P25 system. Unfortunately, most sources suggest that there won't be any unencrypted talkgroups on this new PA StarNet system, which may limit the accessibility of real-time information.

On the other hand, counties not currently utilizing a P25 system will likely continue with their existing methods, such as the OpenSky PA StarNet system adopted by PSP and PEMA. For those counties already using a P25 phase 1 or phase 2 system, integrating cross-connected talkgroups for PSP, PEMA, and other agencies is expected to be a relatively simple process.

The transition towards modernization in county-wide communications has significant implications for emergency responders, law enforcement officials, and the general public. As we move forward with this new system, it's essential that we prioritize accessibility, reliability, and security to ensure seamless communication during critical situations. By adopting cutting-edge technology, our county can set a precedent for effective emergency response systems, ultimately benefiting the community as a whole.
